Magnus Gjoen, known for reimagining the fragility of life through powerful juxtapositions, has joined forces with The Big Issue and Jealous Gallery for the release of Magna Res. The title in latin translates as 'Great Matter' and by extension 'Big Issue'. The striking work depicts a skull intricately embedded with the baroque drama of Fall of the Rebel Angels (Naples, early 18th century, carved ivory), a reminder of both mortality and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. In Gjoen’s hands, the skull becomes not only a memento mori but also a symbol of resilience, questioning what it means to fall and to rise again. This collaboration brings together art and purpose: while Gjoen reflects on the timeless themes of downfall and redemption,
The Big Issue continues its mission to empower those facing hardship, offering pathways from the margins to a brighter future. Through Magna Res, beauty, history, and charity converge - transforming art into an act of hope.
For this project, I wanted to create a piece that feels almost sacred, yet slightly unsettling - a reminder that art can comfort and confront in equal measure.
