(IT’S NOT) THE END presents a harbour of ships rendered in grisaille, its monochrome stillness recalling the final frame of an old black-and-white film. Across the glass covering the work, the words THE END are written with deceptive certainty. The familiar cinematic full stop that signals a story’s conclusion. Yet the glass itself has been shattered.
The fracture becomes the work’s true subject. Rather than accepting the imposed ending, the image resists it. The broken surface suggests an act of refusal: a rejection of finality, defeat, and the neat closure that history, circumstance, or narrative so often attempts to impose. What appears at first to be an elegy becomes a declaration of continuation.
In (It’s Not) The End, the destruction of the barrier is also the opening of possibility. The ships remain in harbour, poised between departure and return, while the cracked inscription reminds us that endings are rarely absolute. The work asks whether the last line is ever truly written, or whether, at the moment we are told the story is over, something else is only just beginning.
