In this striking reinterpretation of Titian’s portrait of the young Farnese as a Knight of Malta, Magnus Gjoen bridges past and present through a subtle yet unexpected intervention. The young nobleman, adorned with the Order’s iconic white cross upon a black cloak, is transformed by the addition of a hand-blown pink glass bubble held delicately in his mouth. At once playful and provocative, the bubble feels both conspicuously out of place and strangely at home within the composition. Gjoen’s contemporary gesture breathes new life into the Renaissance masterpiece, challenging perceptions of tradition, status, and beauty while reimagining the portrait for a modern audience.
