ARCHIVAL PIGMENT INKS AND GOLD INKS ON 110GSM ARCHIVAL PAPER

SIGNED, DATED, STAMPED & NUMBERED

During the restoration of an antique cabinet Gjoen acquired in Italy, reputedly from the Camaldolese monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Florence, a manuscript page was discovered concealed behind one of its drawers.

The image depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary being lifted from the earthly realm beneath a mysterious celestial disc, as witnesses look on below. Traditionally understood as the Assumption, the manuscript offers a rather different interpretation: not an ascent to Heaven, but an abduction from Earth. Perhaps this is why the page was deliberately removed. We can only speculate.

Re-released as an archival pigment print with hand-applied gold leaf, on delicate lightweight paper evoking the character of medieval manuscripts including its torn edge.

A page once hidden, returned to view.
