TIME DEVOURS ALL BUT THE MUSE sees Magnus Gjoen return to one of his enduring themes: the seductive surface of power and the fragility beneath it. A nineteenth-century portrait of a man dressed in seventeenth-century clothing already speaks of identity as performance - one era wearing the costume of another.
Gjoen deepens this tension with an Ikat pattern, florals and camouflage, the latter a pattern of concealment and survival. Set against the ceremonial sword and ornate dress, it asks whether authority has always relied on theatre as much as strength. The playful Mickey Mouse ears further puncture the grandeur, undermining inherited ideas of status and masculinity.
The result is a striking collision of past and present, where beauty, conflict, and vanity remain timeless.
